7 Camping Tips for Sustainability
05/14/24
Ready to hit the road and become one with nature, but feeling a bit eco-anxious about your carbon ‘bootprint’? Worry not! We’re here to guide you through the greenest escapade of your life with some sustainable camping tips that’ll make Mother Nature and your adventure-loving soul both happy.
Leave No Trace
An empty campsite is waiting for you, and when you leave, it’s like you were never there. Spooky, right? But oh so respectful! Brush up on the Leave No Trace principles. This means packing out everything you bring in, being careful with food scraps (squirrels may look cute, but they need their natural diet), and leaving that pretty wildflower exactly where you found it. Also, teaching your kids the LNT principles will help them to be responsible in other key areas of life.
Find the Best Location
Picking the right spot is like choosing the best table at a restaurant—it can make or break your experience. When planning your camping trip, choose established campsites or public lands that welcome visitors. Wild camping is cool, but only if you’re doing it where it’s permitted and won’t disturb the local flora and fauna. Remember, we are merely guests in the great outdoors.
Aim for as Little Waste as Possible
Channel your inner minimalist and think twice about what you pack. Sustainable camping is all about reducing waste, so reusable containers are your BFFs. And hey, single-use plastics are so passé; multi-use is the new black!
Try to divide your garbage into three bins:
- Trash
- Recycling
- Composting
If you are not familiar with composting, it is anything organic that can decompose in the ground, such as coffee grounds, egg shells, apple cores, orange rinds…you get the idea.
Rent or Borrow Camping Gear
Unless you’re braving the wild every other weekend, consider renting or borrowing that mega tent or portable grill. Not only will you save some cool cash, but you’ll also avoid collecting dust on gear that’s used once in a blue moon.
Use Biodegradable Products Whenever Possible
From soap to toothpaste, your choice of products can either harm or help the environment. Go for biodegradable options, and you’ll be giving the Earth a high-five. Plus, you’ll smell like a dream without any nasty chemicals. Win-win!
Help Protect Wildlife
Yes, bears are awesome in forested areas, but feeding them your leftovers? Not so much. Keep your distance and store food properly. It’s about respect, peeps. Remember, you’re visiting their home, so no housewarming gifts are necessary!
Remember to:
- Not leave food scraps on the ground
- Use bear-resistant containers when in forested or remote areas
- Store your food (and trash) in your RV or outside in a secure cooler.
Use Fire Responsibly
Campfires and marshmallows are a classic duo, but make sure your fire practices are as cool as you. Stick to designated fire rings, keep fires small and manageable, and always have water handy to douse those flames thoroughly. Smokey the Bear would be proud. And remember, if the embers are still smoking, the fire’s not completely out yet!
By reading this, you’re already on your way to eco-hero status. Sustainable camping doesn’t require you to have all the answers or do everything perfectly. It’s about making better choices, one campsite at a time. Now go forth, explore responsibly, and don’t forget to share your epic, sustainably-minded camping sagas!
